Seven Springs Mountain Resort

With 285 skiable acres, Seven Springs Mountain Resort is the largest ski area in Pennsylvania. Just an hour drive from Pittsburgh, right off I-76 (PA Turnpike), it is Western PA’s premiere ski resort.

Although its 750-foot vertical drop doesn’t quite rival the bigger mountains in Eastern Pennsylvania (Blue Mountain Ski Resort, Elk Mountain PA, Blue Knob Ski Resort), Seven Springs Mountain Resort skis big. There are black diamond runs all across the mountain and long, winding green slopes bracket the resort, so whatever your ability, you have a lot of varied terrain.

The best area for experts at Seven Springs Mountain Resort is the North Face, where numerous lifts access a series of steep blacks. If its not busy, stick to the Gunnar high speed six-pack and take the runs from the summit. If conditions are right, you can head skiers left from the top into the Turtle Neck and Turtle Claw glades. There are also some maintained tree lines off North Pole lift. Seven Springs PA is truly a tree-skiers mountain, and the 125-inch average snowfall ensures a few good days every season.

Intermediates will find terrain well within their abilities on all parts of the mountain, including the wide blue runs above the main lodge. Likewise, beginners will experience Seven Springs PA as a huge hill, with gentle and winding runs off almost every lift. The longest of the long is the 1.3-mile Lost Boy, which comes from Tahoe Lodge at the summit of Seven Springs Mountain Resort to the base of the North Pole quad. Three ground conveyer lifts at the base make Seven Springs PA a good place for first-day skiers as well, and the ski school is well rated.

The last decade or so has seen Seven Springs PA invest in its parks and freestyle terrain, so it now boasts some of the best freestyle options in the state, including a large half-pipe regular rated among the very best on the East Coast. The range of parks makes it a good place to learn tricks before trying them on the bigger features.

Ski racers or amateur speedsters can also test their ability—and race against friends—at the 12- to 14- gate NASTAR course.

Seven Springs Mountain Resort is a year-round resort, with a 18-hole golf course and conference center. This dual purpose ensure plenty of winter accommodation, with over 400 rooms and 1,200 condos within walking distance of the lifts. For many in the western part of the state, though, Seven Springs PA is close enough for a morning ski session that gets you home for lunch or an evening out of night skiing (lights cover almost the complete resort).
