Tussey Mountain Ski Area

Generations of Penn State students have come to know and love this small ski resort in Central PA, just a few miles from the university’s main campus. The proximity and affordable prices attract many students to Tussey Mountain Ski Area, but also a lot of local families. It’s small—just 50 acres, 500-foot vertical drop, and two chairlifts—but the lines aresn’t too long and the atmosphere is good.

The main runs at Tussey Mountain Ski Area are Utah and Tuscarora, skiers left of the Utah quad chair. The top of Tuscarora and the narrower Shamokin trails are rated black, though this is a somewhat ambitious designation for a slightly steeper top section. A terrain park on lower Utah takes up desirable mountain terrain but has some features to satisfy park rats. Intermediates should try the top of Utah then cut to the bottom of Tuscarora or cut over to Grizzly. Beginners will enjoy Tussey Mountain’s long green run, Deer Run, which also branches off onto the Nittany-themed Lion’s Way.

New skiers can learn their turns at the Little Bear beginners area, serviced by a surface lift. There’s also an area for snowtubing with its own lift.

History of Tussey Mountain Ski Area
A public ski area named Skimont operated on Tussey Mountain in the 1960s, but the hill sat idle for several years before a private ski club, Bald Knob Ski Club, took it over in the 1970s. It was opened to the public again in 1981 under its present name, Tussey Mountain. Expansions in the 2000s saw new the addition of terrain and an area for snowtubing.

An all-seasons resort, Tussey Mountain hosts concerts and weddings in the summer and has a go-karting area, mini-golf, a zip-line, batting cages, a skate park, a driving range, and a par 3 golf course. All just six miles from State College.
